When we at Pendax AB decided to develop sound absorbers for meeting rooms, we chose to develop a series of perforated resonators. One reason is that they can be adapted to different designs and styles, which interior designers particularly appreciate. Another reason is, of course, that they are highly effective sound absorbers that can be used to improve the acoustics of a room. They work by allowing sound waves to pass through the perforations and then reflecting them into the resonator where they are dampened through friction and transformed into thermal energy. The more perforations there are, the more effective the absorption.
As we all know, poor acoustics in a workplace or meeting room can cause fatigue and poor concentration, which can have a negative impact on productivity. Our brains can compensate for poor acoustics for short periods when we are sitting in a reverberant room ourselves, but if we are on a remote call and listening to reverberant sound coming from a speaker, it can be truly unbearable. That is why it is important to have a good sound environment in these places, and a particularly effective solution for this is the use of perforated resonators, the same type used by world-class professionals in recording studios.
A Smarter and More Efficient Sound Absorber
Perforated resonators are a type of resonance absorber that function as a spring-mass system and begin to resonate at a certain frequency. These absorbers consist of a frame that is airtight and covered by a relatively thin wooden membrane. Inside the absorber, there is insulating mineral wool. Sound pressure causes vibrations, reducing the energy of the sound field. The air inside the absorber is also set in motion, and the insulating material absorbs the transferred energy. The insulating material also dampens the vibration of the membrane enough to make it effective over a broader frequency range and avoid echo from the absorber.
Perforated resonators are primarily used to absorb sound in low and mid-low frequencies where human speech occurs and is difficult to capture with regular sound absorbers. Therefore, it is a very effective solution for reducing noise levels in meeting rooms and workplaces. By using these sound absorbers, you reduce reverberation and improve the sound environment, leading to increased concentration and productivity.
At Pendax AB, we currently manufacture two types of sound absorbers, FlexWall Mobile Acoustic and FlexWall Acoustic but as the reception has been so positive, we will undoubtedly continue to develop this further. FlexWall Mobile Acoustic is a rollable screen that can be moved to the location where it is needed. Additionally, it can be used to divide the room as a mobile wall. FlexWall Acoustic is a sound absorber that is placed on the floor by the wall where it is securely fastened. Both options can be customized with any fabric, making them adaptable to any interior design and provide a pleasant and aesthetic feel.
